Lisa’s Loving Care, Senior Companion Services~ A "Real Life" Story of my current care for Keith.
I haven't been posting here lately since I have been taking care of Keith Mondays through Fridays 1-4pm. Keith has a great personality and is always upbeat even though his legs are very weak and can only be mobile via a walker, for just a few steps, or a scooter. I do light housekeeping, laundry, and cooking but after my "chores" I sit with Keith, he in his special recliner and I parked in his scooter next to him. There we share stories and look at his pictures and reminisce. It's important that I engage with Keith and give him lots of conversation and attention as he spends most of his days alone since family is in Rhode Island for summer vacation for a few months (respite needed). He does get some visitors for "quick visits" by a home health aid for showers and a nurse who comes twice a week to tend to his lacerations which were due to a bad fall(s) while home alone recently.
Keith has an "Apple" watch which detected that he fell and called 911 to which an emergency dispatcher was able to talk with him through his watch and determined an ambulance was warranted. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he received 8 stitches from a deep cut over his eye. From the fall he suffered deep lacerations on his elbow and knee. Since he is alone most of the day until I arrive at 1pm I call him each morning for a "wellness check" to be sure he is up in his recliner as opposed to his bed (it is important he doesn't spend all day in bed!) Also, while on the phone with him, I remind him to take his medicine.
Keith is an absolute sweetheart, and I always look forward to spending time with him. Last week, a physical therapist determined Keith needs 24/7 assistance as he is at constant risk of falling and perhaps injuring himself significantly. Medicaid does not require that Keith be put on a long waiting list. His case is deemed as "urgent". I have contacted the family in Rhode Island and Montana, and I will take him to his primary care doctor early next week so the doctor can fill out the Medicaid application to expedite his placement in a nursing home for 24/7 care. He is not happy with the turn of events, but I will support him as much as possible. Family from Rhode Island will probably fly south for the placement, but I am here to offer any assistance I can. I plan to visit him regularly once he is placed, as we are "buddies!"
8-12-24 I got notified by Keith's family that he needs full time 7 days a week home healthcare (they have) since he can barely stand because his legs are so weak (nerve problem). Keith doesn't yet want to go to an assisted living facility so his family will try to care for him at home for as long as possible. Keith insists the family keep me every Tuesday and Thursday since he said, "You are the highlight of my week!" We enjoy each other's company immensely!
